Why eating protein first may be your game changer.
Research shows that the order in which you eat your food may impact your metabolism. Specifically Eating Protein First before carbohydrates can help control blood sugar and boost your metabolism. Here’s how it works:
Better Blood Sugar Control
Eating protein and veggies before carbs can lower blood sugar and insulin spikes after a meal. This approach has shown great results, especially for people with type 2 diabetes, but the benefits could extend to others as well.
Improved Insulin Response
The order you eat your food matters. Starting with protein and fat can help prevent big jumps in blood sugar after you eat. This could be a helpful trick for anyone aiming to keep their blood sugar in check.
Hormones at Play
Eating protein first doesn’t just affect blood sugar. When carbs come last, there’s a higher release of GLP1, a hormone that controls hunger and helps balance blood sugar. It’s like your body’s own helper in regulating appetite and energy!
Why Protein First Works
Here’s what might be going on when you start with protein:
1. Slower Digestion: Protein and fat slow down how quickly food moves from your stomach, which can help your blood sugar rise more gradually.
2. Better Insulin Response: Protein can make your body respond to insulin more effectively.
3. Less Carb Absorption: Eating protein first may change how carbs are absorbed in your gut.
While these findings weren’t specifically about perimenopausal women, they could be especially helpful during this time. Women in perimenopause may experience changes in insulin sensitivity and weight gain, so trying a protein-first approach might be worth a shot. Would hate to leave without giving you a recipe. It’s crazy easy!
Fresh not frozen chicken breast, throw together some lime juice (1 lime), lime zest, garlic, salt, pepper, cumin, red pepper flakes, ½ cup cilantro, and olive oil 3-4 tablespoons all into a bowl and whisk until thoroughly combined. Marinate for about 30 minutes at least. You can toss these on the grill or what I like to do is put in pan – cook stove top – for 4 minutes on each side, on high heat, with additional whole garlic cloves, then place them on foil on a cookie sheet pan to bake at 375 for 25ish minutes. Enjoy!
