Are you having a hard time getting enough protein in perimenopause?  For many women hitting the right protein targets can be tough. But don’t worry! There are easy ways to meet your protein needs without feeling overwhelmed

What’s All This About Protein in Perimenopause?

Increasing your protein in perimenopause is super important for our bodies. It helps build muscles, keeps our skin healthy, and supports many body functions. For most people, getting about 1-2 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight is recommended. This means if you weigh 60 kg (about132 lbs), you need around 60-120 grams of protein each day.

Try a Different Approach Every Once in a While!

Instead of stressing about hitting 30 grams at every meal, consider starting with 20 grams of protein. You can also add something called branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) to your diet.

What Are BCAAs?

BCAAs are special nutrients that help support muscle health. While they can be useful, remember that you should still focus on getting good quality protein from foods. BCAAs alone won’t give you all the benefits you get from whole foods.

The Protein-BCAA Connection: What’s the Science?

Some studies have looked at mixing protein with BCAAs. One study found that taking 5.6 grams of BCAAs after a workout helped increase muscle protein building by22% over four hours compared to those who didn’t take BCAAs. However, it was still less effective than just having whey protein on its own.

Magic of Protein Plus BCAAs: While BCAAs by themselves aren’t a miracle solution, they can work together with proteins for even better results.

Boost Muscle Building: BCAAs, especially one called leucine, help activate a process that builds muscle.

Reduce Muscle Breakdown: BCAAs can help slow down the breakdown of muscle protein, which is especially important for women going through perimenopause and menopause.

How to Combine Protein and BCAAs: Here are some easy ways to include BCAAs in your diet:

After Your Workout: After exercising, you can enjoy a whey protein shake with around 25 grams of protein along with 5 grams of BCAAs. This combo helps get your muscles the good stuff they need to recover. If you like plant-based protein, that works too!

Between Meals: For a snack, consider having greek yogurt that gives you around15 grams of protein and add in 3-5 grams of BCAAs. This helps keep amino acids in your blood steady, which is helpful for muscle building.

Important Things to Keep in Mind: While mixing protein with BCAAs can be helpful, here are a few things to remember. Quality is key. Try to eat high-quality protein from whole foods as your main source. Everyone is different and unique. It’s a good idea to talk to a healthcare professional to find out how much protein and BCAAs you really need. Also more isn’t always better. Taking too many BCAAs won’t give extra benefits and could cause other issues.

Conclusion: While BCAAs by themselves might not be the ultimate solution for muscle building, using them alongside good protein sources could provide some benefits for muscle health and recovery. Always aim for a balanced diet rich in proteins first, and consider BCAAs as a helpful addition rather than a main course for your nutrition. Remember, the best way to stay healthy is to eat a variety of foods that include lots of good proteins. Enjoy nutritious meals, and let BCAA supplements support your journey to better muscle health during perimenopause and beyond!
